Lightning Face Off Against Local Badges Team for a Good Cause

Since their inception in 2017, the Lethbridge Lightning have been focused on giving back to the community they call home. “Hockey is a game where you’re taught to remember where you came from” remarks Lightning defenceman Dune Wald. “Giving back to the community is how you thank those who support you and show that the team is a part of the community.”

The Lethbridge Lightning offer a unique opportunity to elite players in the area who may otherwise be unable to continue playing high caliber hockey after wrapping up their junior or university careers. “The game of hockey teaches you a lot of life lessons,” says Wald. “It teaches you perseverance, teamwork, and how to perform in high pressure situations. We have an extremely classy organization made up of great players, who are even better people off the ice.”

Lightning President Rob Zintel says it’s a symbiotic relationship between the players, volunteers and the community that make icing a team of this level possible. “This year we have fifty two volunteers and fifty two sponsors supporting the team. Covid has brought financial challenges to many senior hockey teams in Alberta, but the tremendous support we have from our sponsors and volunteers has made it possible for us to continue bringing great hockey to our fans.”

The Lightning are hitting the ice for a special cause this weekend. 20% of ticket sales from Saturday’s Bolts vs Badges Charity Classic game will be donated to the Jack Ady Cancer Centre. “We have numerous players, volunteers and staff members who have been impacted by cancer in different ways. This game gives the team an opportunity to give back to the community and to a charity that is important to us” Zintel said when asked about the significance of this weekend’s game.

The puck drops for the first annual Bolts vs Badges Charity Classic this Saturday, January 15th at 7:30PM at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
