Lethbridge Eagles Go 10 Games with No Losses

The Lethbridge Eagles of the AJFHL (Alberta Junior Female Hockey League) have returned to action in 2021 and made a statement. The team finished last in the league in their previous two seasons before the COVID year suspended league play in the 2020-21 season. Discussions during that time made it uncertain that the team would be able to continue, with challenges in both player recruitment and filling leadership positions for the club major concerns. However the Eagles organization rallied through the summer of 2021 under new head coach Megan Skelly and have posted a loss-free start to their 2021 season and lead the league coming into November.

The 2021 Eagles show no signs of their former struggles, with a team that is dominating the opposition on both offence and defence. The 9-0-1 team boasts a league-leading GAA, having allowed a total of 9 goals in the 2021-22 season to date. Starting goaltender Abigail Mucha (#31) leads the team in games played and has a .962 save percentage, followed closely by backup rookie netminder Haley Whelen (#30) has posted 2 starts and boasts a .966 save percentage. All three of the Eagle’s crease monkeys have below 1.00 GAAs season to date.

On the front line, scoring leaders Tenelle Lind, Kendi Lundell, and Eva DeBaie have combined for 19 goals in 9 games, with final tallies from the 10th game, an 11-0 win against the Calgary Jags, still to be posted.

In addition to the off-season leadership changes, the team has benefited from the acquisition of 6 USports veterans who transfered when the UofL Pronghorns women’s hockey club disbanded in 2020.

The Eagles play again today at 2:45pm (3:45 on your microwave if you haven’t updated for Daylight Savings time yet), at home against the Southern Sage. Stop by Nic Sheran arena for the free game to watch the highest level of women’s hockey in Lethbridge.
